Abstract

This abstract reports the actions of the “Tarumã Vida” Project developed by the Embrapa Amazônia Ocidental and IFAM in the Tarumã-Mirim Settlement (Manaus-AM) and it is intended to produce knowledge and sustainable actions in a collaborative fashion with family farmers. The diagnoses have shown that the removal of the forest is associated with the production of charcoal and firewood, the exploitation of wood as well as cattle and crop farming activities. The project has taken into consideration the handling of the farming landscape and the social-economic aspects which have resulted in the construction of different alternatives in objectives, surface, composition, framing and management, in 29 small farms. The courses have proved to be important means for changes once they made for the substitution of the sale of charcoal for the production of vegetable crops. The weekly income has increased from 54,26%. After the course on Associativism, the Rural Farming Association of the Pau Rosa Branch (Assagrir) was founded, allowing for the viability of new actions. The empowerment processes have spanned the levels cognitive, psychological, economic and political.
