This paper presents results of the interaction between research and extension service in assessing the effect of organic compost in the improvement of soils, training of farmers to practice organic agriculture and the enhancement of organic products. The work was carried out in a system of cooperation network with participation of public and private institutions, development of research, undergraduate students and small farmers. The network seeks to preserve the environmental heritage through the reuse of organic waste and the improvement of soils with organic compost. The scientific experiment assessed the effects of the compost in the production of vegetables by using sustainability indicators. The undergraduate subject develops practical activities with social-environmental proposal. The scientific experiment was conducted on the property of farmers who followed the effect of compost from organic waste in increasing the production of vegetables. The results achieved through this work, shows the importance of cooperation networks for the integration of research and extension service.
