This article summarizes the results of an investigation whose objective was to identify the most relevant semantic features of the category “people”, as this has been constructed by the main political leaders of the XXth century in Venezuela. The study was carried out within the transdisciplinary framework of critical discourse analysis. The corpus consisted of speeches pronounced by Rómulo Betancourt -tlie founder of Acción Democrática (Democratic Action) party- and by the present president of the Republic, Hugo Chávez Frías. l he analysis allows us to conclude that “the people", in populist discourse, is associated, with diverse and openly contradictory units of meaning that identify it as: 1) the historic subject of its own liberation, in which case it is constituted as a “cyclop”; 2) the object of maltreatment, neglect and manipulation of power, in which case it becomes a martyr, and 3) the target of the government’s “gifts”, in which case it becomes the eternal beneficiary.
