Abstract

The objective of this article is to study the way in which school-aged children use verb tenses in their narratives. Therefore it is based on an analysis of the verb tenses of the indicative (modo indicativo) in 208 oral narratives. The texts were obtained during two tasks (formal and informal) with 24 children (ages 6, 9 and 12) belonging to two different schools. The results show a growing ability to provide the listener with clues about the differences between the events that are part of the narrative (‘then’) and those that are part of the conversation (‘now’). Additionally, they indicate a development in the capability to consider the listener’s expectations and to use narrative structures for the organization of the narrative text.

Karina Hess Zimmermann

Doctora en Lingüística por El Colegio de México. Sus investigaciones han girado en torno al desarrollo lingüístico del niño, especialmente durante los años escolares (etapas tardías). Ha impartido diversos cursos sobre psicolingüística, desarrollo del lenguaje y valoración infantil en diversas instituciones en México. Actualmente es profesora en la Facultad de Psicología de la Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro.
