Marcadores de modalidad epistémica y evidencial en el análisis de las conclusiones de artículos de investigación de disciplinas distintas

The aim of this paper is to contribute to the description of an academic genre: the research article, studying some linguistic devices used to convey epistemic and evidential modality. In particular, I will examine the use of certain markers of epistemic and evidential modality: epistemic and evidential verbs, modal and semimodal verbs, in the discussion/ conclusion of research articles in medical sciences and paleontology, focusing on the relation between these modal markers and the notions of subjectification and grammaticalisation. I claim that modality is a linguistic category with gradual distinctions, which characterize modal markers along a scalar dimension of subjectivity, related with degrees of grammaticalization. I will try to show that these modal markers are related to the domain of the discipline.
