Representations of love in Valter Hugo Mãe novel’s “O paraíso são os outros”

This article aims to analyze the representations of love in “O paraíso são os outros”, the last novel of the Portuguese writer Valter Hugo Mãe dedicated to children and young. In Brazil, Cosac Naify published the book with illustrations by the plastic artist Nino Cais, which also will be observed. Te theoretical approach combines ideas from Systemic-Functional Linguistics (Halliday and Matthiessen 2004) and the Grammar of Visual Design (Kress and van Leeuwen 1996; 2006), aligned with a sociosemiotic perspective and using a methodological paradigm from qualitative research to analyze text and image. The results of this analysis suggest that the representations created by images are not in harmony with the representations proposed by the text, reinforcing stereotypes of an ideal family and romantic love.
