From Marginalization to Hegemony: The transformation of Pachamama in Bolivian Discourses

Pachamama is a central figure in the Andean worldview, associated with creation, fertility, and natural cycles. Her representation has undergone significant transformations: from a telluric deity in ancestral myths, to a protective mother syncretized with the Virgin Mary during colonial times, and more recently, to a political and legal symbol within the Bolivian State. This article employs Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) with a decolonial approach, integrating analytical tools to examine the shifts in her representation. The analyzed corpus is interdisciplinary and includes Andean myths, colonial chronicles, archaeological and anthropological studies, as well as recent Bolivian legislation. The findings reveal how representations of Pachamama have been shaped by historical processes, colonial discourses, and indigenous resistance strategies, positioning her today as a key
symbol in debates on decolonization, political ecology, and the rights of nature.
