About the Journal
Aims and scope
Paranoá is a scientific journal maintained by the Graduate Program in Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Brasília that publishes original research works within a multidisciplinary scope of the different academic areas of Architecture and Urbanism, including: Project and Planning; Theory, History and Criticism; Technology, Environment and Sustainability.
Paranoá is open to contributions of national and international academic community, and are not limited to architects and planners, but including engineers, designers, geographers, economists, sociologists and other specialists who work at different scales of the city and the building.
Paranoá accepts manuscripts in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. This scientific journal does not charge submission fees, article processing charges or other publishing fees.
Section Policies
Project and Planning (PP)
This section publishes articles about policies, plans and management at various scales, from building to territory. In the building ambit, research work involving project strategies, configuration, representation and accessibility will be accepted. In the urban ambit, Paranoá journal will publish analyses and proposals on urban and territorial planning, urban legislation, rehabilitation, urban land regularization, mobility and transportation, as well as all issues related to the project, occupation and appropriation of urban space.

Theory, History and Critique
This section publishes articles on theoretical and historical processes of conception, transformation and reflection on art, architecture, city and urbanism, including research in theory and history of architecture; theory and history of city and urbanism; heritage and preservation; aesthetics, hermeneutics, and semiotics. In a more widely and openly way, this section accepts manuscripts on the epistemological and social foundations of culture, the critical articulation of thought about cultural heritage, and empirical study and historical sources, with diverse methodologies and an interdisciplinary approach, in many different spatial-temporal clippings.

Technology, Environment and Sustainability
This section publishes articles on technologies, techniques and production processes of Architecture and the built environment, with special attention to the issue of sustainability. Paranoá journal accepts the following approaches in technology described below: discussion on the on structural systems in Architecture and stages of construction; projects, techniques, materials, components, elements, systems and processes in the field of construction and production of building and urban space; issues of quality performance, environmental comfort and energy efficiency; research on the built environment regarding the quality of space and its management, rehabilitation in its physical and socio-environmental aspects.

Book Reviews
This section accepts papers that present and critically analyze books in the area of Architecture and Urbanism and the like that have been published in the last two (2) years. Reviews by the authors themselves will not be accepted. Reviews can be up to 20,000 characters with spaces (including bibliographic references).
Reviews will be evaluated by the Editorial Committee of the Journal.
Translations
This section publishes translations into Portuguese of texts relevant to the fields of Architecture, Urbanism and the like. Translations must be carried out by competent translators and must have the authorization for publication of the authors and the publisher where the work was originally published. The evaluation will be carried out by the journal's editorial board considering the relevance of the text, its academic and scientific relevance and the quality of the translation.
Interviews
Transcripts of unpublished interviews with researchers and thinkers of relevance to the area of Architecture and Urbanism and related areas. The interviewee must sign a publication authorization term to be made available by the editors after the publication of the interview is approved.
The interviews will be evaluated by the Editorial Committee of the Journal.
Peer Review Process
All manuscripts are submitted to the double-blind peer review model.
The reviewers are experts in the research theme of the manuscript.
Step 1 – Evaluation by the Editors
Manuscripts submitted for publication will be evaluated according to the policies adopted by Paranoá journal, considering the relevance of the research topic, the journal´s aims and scope, the structure of the article, the methodology, the quality of the writing, and the relevance of the references used. All submitted manuscripts that not follow these criteria will be indicated for newly revised submission or immediately rejected by the editors.
Step 2 – Plagiarism detection
Manuscripts will be submitted to plagiarism detection with the help of a specialized software.
Step 3 – Double-blind peer review
Two reviewers that are experts in the research theme of the study will be chosen by the Associate Editor to be evaluated. The deadline for peer review and response to the editor is 30 days. In case the appointed reviewers do not meet the deadline, there will be a negotiation regarding the extension of the deadline or the appointment of a new reviewer.
The following aspects of the manuscript will be evaluated:
- the structure and the quality of the writing;
- the originality and relevance of the content;
- the clarity of the research cutout and its objectives;
- the pertinence of the methodology in relation to the objectives;
- the relevance, pertinence and scope of the references;
- the quality of the theoretical foundation and development of the manuscript;
- the consistency of the results and the quality of the discussion;
- the quality and relevance of figures, tables and graphs.
After the peer review process, the Associate Editors will take note of the report and recommend the following options: a) accept for publication; b) accept for publication with compulsory corrections; c) submit again for peer review; d) submit to another journal; e) reject for publication.
Step 4 - Review, translation and editing
After final acceptance of the paper, editors may require a technical review of Portuguese, to be carried out by reviewers appointed or approved by the journal. The cost of the review will be the authors' responsibility.
Revista Paranoá encourages authors to translate their papers into English to expand the reach of their work, facilitating the internationalization of their research. However, the cost of translation will be the authors' responsibility. We emphasize that translation is discretionary but highly recommended.
All authors of articles approved for publication must sign the Declaration of Authorship.
Approved articles are published within a maximum of 1 year, considering the submission date.
The rejection rate in the 1st stage was 57% in 2021.
The rejection rate from the 3rd stage was 30% in 2021.
Periodicity
The Paranoá journal periodicity is biannual with papers published continuously.
Open Access Policy
The journal offers immediate free access to its content, following the principle that making scientific knowledge freely available to the public provides greater worldwide democratization of knowledge.
Archiving
The journal uses the LOCKSS system to create a file system distributed among participating libraries and allows them to create permanent journal files for preservation and restoration.
