About the Journal
Focus and Scope
The journal "História, histórias" is a quarterly electronic journal published online in an open access format, with continuous publication flow. It is dedicated to the dissemination and discussion of research works in the field of History and related areas, valuing innovative approaches, critical perspectives, and significant methodological contributions to the development of the discipline.
Our mission is to foster academic debate through the publication of original research, providing a pluralistic space for different historiographical traditions and research lines, with special attention to contributions that promote the development of historical knowledge in theoretical, methodological, and empirical dimensions.
Open Science Compliance
"História, histórias" follows contemporary debates on Open Science and seeks to implement its practices, recognizing the specificities of the Humanities and the field of History. In this sense, the journal adopts:
- Editorial Process Transparency: The evaluation process is clearly described, with objective criteria for acceptance, revision, or rejection of articles.
- Preprints Policy: We accept the submission of manuscripts previously made available on non-commercial preprint servers, provided this information is explicitly declared at the time of submission and the work is not under evaluation by another journal.
- Research Data Openness: We encourage authors to make their data available in open access repositories and to include references to digitized sources, archival documents, databases, and other research materials available online.
- Open Reviewer Identity: We offer reviewers the option to reveal their identity after the completion of the evaluation process, with consent.
Authors, when submitting articles to "História, histórias," commit to making data and sources used in the research available upon request, respecting legal, ethical, and privacy limitations.
Digital Preservation
"História, histórias" is integrated into the institutional digital preservation system of the University of Brasília, ensuring long-term persistence and accessibility of its content. Additionally, we maintain regular backup copies and preserve the entire publication history since the journal's inception.
EDITORIAL POLICY
Preprints
"História, histórias" accepts manuscripts previously made available on recognized preprint servers. Authors must inform, at the time of submission, if the manuscript is available as a preprint, indicating the repository and the corresponding DOI. This information will appear as a note in the final published version if the article is approved.
Peer Review Process
"História, histórias" adopts a double-blind peer review system, in which the identities of authors and reviewers are kept confidential throughout the evaluation process. After initial approval by the editor, each manuscript is evaluated by at least two expert reviewers on the subject.
The evaluation process follows these steps:
-
Preliminary Assessment: Conducted by the Editor and the Editorial Board, who verify the text's adequacy to the journal's editorial proposal, its initial academic quality, and compliance with submission guidelines.
-
Peer Review: Manuscripts approved in the preliminary stage are sent to at least two reviewers with expertise in the area. The possible results of the evaluation are:
- Accepted without revision: The manuscript is approved without the need for modifications.
- Accepted with minor revisions: The manuscript is conditionally approved pending minor adjustments.
- Accepted with major revisions: The manuscript requires substantial modifications and will undergo a new round of evaluation after the changes.
- Rejected: The manuscript does not meet the criteria for publication.
-
Editorial Decision: Based on the reviews received, the Editorial Board makes the final decision on the publication of the manuscript. In case of significant divergence between reviews, a third reviewer may be consulted. The editor has the freedom to accept or reject an article even when reviewers express a contrary opinion.
-
Editing and Publication: After approval, the manuscript undergoes final review and editing before publication.
The name of the editor responsible for the evaluation process is indicated at the end of each published text.
Open Data
"História, histórias" encourages its authors to adopt open data practices, providing detailed information about sources, archives, and databases used in their research. We recommend:
- Including complete references to digitized documents and archives available online.
- Providing links to institutional repositories containing data, interviews, images, and other materials used in the research.
- Properly citing data according to established standards.
Authors commit to making the data analyzed in the article available upon direct request, respecting legal, ethical, and copyright limitations.

- Plagiarism: Appropriating ideas, processes, results, or words from another person without proper attribution.
- Duplicate Publication: Submitting the same study to more than one journal simultaneously.
- Redundant Publication: Inappropriately dividing the results of a study into multiple articles.
Procedures for Correction and Retraction:
- Errors identified after publication will be corrected through errata published in a subsequent issue.
- Proven cases of misconduct will result in the retraction of the article, with the due publication of an explanatory note.
- In all cases, authors will be notified and will have the opportunity to respond to allegations.
Sanctions: The Editorial Board will determine penalties for proven cases of misconduct, which may include:
- Rejection of the current manuscript.
- Prohibition of submission for a specified period.
- Notification to the author's affiliated institution.
- Publication of a retraction with details of the improper conduct.
Adoption of Similarity Verification Software
"História, histórias" uses Turnitin for similarity verification in all submitted manuscripts, and may also use generative AI tools for this function. Articles undergo this verification at the preliminary evaluation stage. In cases of high detected similarity:
- Minor occurrences of self-plagiarism (excerpts from previous works by the author): authors will be asked to reformulate the text.
- Significant similarity with third-party publications: the submission will be immediately rejected.
- Proven plagiarism: authors will be subject to the sanctions provided for in the ethics policy.
Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources
"História, histórias" recognizes the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in the field of academic production. Our policy regarding the use of AI is to allow its use, provided there is complete transparency:
- We require authors who use AI tools to explicitly declare this use in their submission, detailing how, where, and for what purpose AI was employed.
- The AI tool cannot be listed as a co-author of the article.
- Responsibility for the content lies entirely with the human authors identified in the text.
- We value originality of thought, critical analysis, and personal narrative style as essential elements of historiographical production.
Sex, Gender, and Race Issues
"História, histórias" supports the DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) principles and the SAGER (Sex and Gender Equity in Research) guidelines. We seek to:
- Ensure gender equity and racial diversity in the composition of the editorial board.
- Encourage diversity in contributions to all sections of the journal.
- Promote representativeness in the selection of reviewers.
- Stimulate research that addresses issues related to gender, race, and social inclusion in historiographical production.
