Quantity is only a vector of reality, not its whole. It is problematic to rely on a logic that rests and slumbers on numbers, on the certainty that everything is calculable. All it takes is for an unforeseen factor to appear, and all certainties disappear. Quality is not just a subjective taste, but the way things are and exist. It is necessary to strip away arrogance and admit the strength of the fragility of the “maybe”, typical of the human sciences and of non-knowledge. In the logic of Qualis, any publication is worth 1 as would be worth 1 an essay such as The Origin of Species, Capital, The Theory of Relativity, Being and Time. Funding, positions, and scholarships are distributed based on this illogical logic. This is not serious. Brazil is not serious. This numerical logic does not even know what quality is, but seeks to dictate the excellence or lack of research lines, laboratories, equipment, and the number of computers that funding agencies provide to researchers.
