The Nominal agreement in compounds formed by adjectives and names

Abstract

The objective of this squib is to discuss how number flexion occurs in compounds formed by adjectives and names, based on the hypothesis that the flexional variations are due to concurrent analyzes coexisting in the language. Comparing the number flexion in phrases and in compounds formed by the same categories, we realize that there is a morphological analysis of the compound, which points to a number flexion in the semantic head of the compound, but also a syntactic one, which indicates that order is also a key to understand the attested flexional possibilities. These different analyzes take place both formally and informally in Brazilian Portuguese. The conclusion of this squib is that the flexion in the compound words is associated with the degree of transparency of a compound, and not only with the internal components.
