This work proposes to analyze the process of subjugation, attempted through a silencing system imposed by the character-narrator of the text “The meek one”, by Dostoevsky, to the young orphan he had taken as his wife. Based on the Bakhtinian concepts of excess of vision and exteriority, the moment in which the protagonist perceives the woman's humming as a vestige of her subjectivity stands out. Singing existed in the heroine's concrete, autonomous world, and he couldn't quite reach it.
