WHO SPEAKS TRASIANKA?
TRANSLATION AND LINGUISTIC HYBRIDITY IN BELARUS

This article has as its starting point the translation and subtitling of the film Viva Belarus! (2012) into Portuguese and its main objective is to reflect on the translation of the Belarusian-Russian hybrid language therein. The feature film takes place in Belarus, a former Soviet republic since 1994 under the rule of dictator Aliaksandr Lukašenka, responsible for integration policies with Russia and persecution of dissidents, especially Belarusian speakers. In this context, trasianka, as the hybrid language between Belarusian and Russian is known, offers challenges for translation and subtitling with regards to identity. The reflections on translation strategies are based on the work of Gonçalves (1990), and identity, based on the thoughts of Fanon (1968) and Foucault (2019), among others.
