TRANSLATION AND LINGUISTIC HYBRIDITY IN BELARUS

Abstract

This article has as its starting point the translation and subtitling of the film Viva Belarus! (2012) into Portuguese and its main objective is to reflect on the translation of the Belarusian-Russian hybrid language therein. The feature film takes place in Belarus, a former Soviet republic since 1994 under the rule of dictator Aliaksandr Lukašenka, responsible for integration policies with Russia and persecution of dissidents, especially Belarusian speakers. In this context, trasianka, as the hybrid language between Belarusian and Russian is known, offers challenges for translation and subtitling with regards to identity. The reflections on translation strategies are based on the work of Gonçalves (1990), and identity, based on the thoughts of Fanon (1968) and Foucault (2019), among others.

Paterson Franco Costa, a:1:{s:5:"pt_BR";s:4:"UFBA";}

PhD student of Cultural and Intersemiotic Translation, Master's Degree in Literature and Culture, Bachelor in Modern Foreign Languages at Federal University of Bahia, Brazil. Areas of interest: Intersemiotic Translation, Subtitling, Post-Colonial Studies. Published books and articles in Russian and Portuguese on Post-Soviet topics and language learning. Currently holds a doctoral grant from FAPESB - Foundation for Research Support of the State of Bahia.

Jorge Hernán Yerro, UFBA

Possui professorado em Castelhano, Literatura e Latim pelo Instituto Superior Nacional Del Professorado Mariano Acosta (2001), mestrado em Letras e Lingüística pela Universidade Federal da Bahia (2006) e doutorado em Letras e Lingüística pela Universidade Federal da Bahia (2012). Atualmente é professor adjunto da Universidade Federal da Bahia, onde é membro docente do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Literatura e Cultura (PPGLitCult). Tem experiência na área de Letras, com ênfase em Tradução, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Estudos de tradução, legendagem, tradução automática, tradução de manifestações artísticas e culturais subalternizadas, tradução e ética. Faz parte da Comissão Editorial da Revista abehache, Associação Brasileira de Hispanistas, atuando como Editor Chefe.
