SHOULD PREJUDICE BE TRANSLATED? A REFLECTION ON THE ETHICS IN THE ACT OF TRANSLATION BASED ON THE TRANSLATION OF JULES VERNE’S LA JANGADA


ABSTRACT: This article is based on a translation project of Jules Verne’s novel La Jangada (1881), aiming to propose a reflection on the ethical issues involved in the translation of a text that can be misconstrued as prejudiced from the point of view of its target audience. We understand that the answer to the question “Should prejudice be translated?” depends on many factors, including the purpose and the target audience of the translation. We borrow Pym’s (2012) view on the ethics of translation. We also draw on Pym’s (2012) concept of responsibility, as well as Nord’s (2016) definition of loyalty, in order to attempt to understand what an ethical translation means. Some excerpts of the translated novel are presented to highlight this issue and to discuss the relevance of the translation possibilities.
