Se os debates que cercam a noção de fidelidade em tradução ainda persistem, e se o próprio ato de traduzir é ainda alvo de muita desconfiança, é muito provavelmente em razão das próprias origens do ato de traduzir, cuja gênese deve ser explorada na área da tradução dos textos religiosos, para os quais São Jerônimo assim como Fílon de Alexandria preconizava a tradução literal, único método apto a não “alterar os textos sacros” (OUSTINOFF, 2003, p. 28).
