The article goes through some of the paths followed by one of the central ideas that Amazonian ethnology owes to P. Menget. The finding that Amazonian social systems have the reference to specific forms of 'alterity' as an important foundation is at the origin of the renewal of our understanding on South American indigenous collectives and the theoretical advances Amazonian ethnology has brought to anthropological theories in the last decades.
