BRUNIRING THE ARTISANS, REDESIGNING THE PRESENT: POTTERY PRACTICES BY WOMEN ARTISANS ARATUIPENSES

Abstract

This article is the result of a post-doctoral research in progress, in which the protagonism of women artisans in pottery is approached. The objective is to discuss the pottery practice carried out by such women, in the context of the Maragogipinho district - Aratuípe, in Bahia, considering the work as a locus of environmental preservation and resistance to social exclusion. As a problem of study, it is evident how the pottery practices adopted by this traditional community of potters act responsibly in the environment, contributing to the sustainable development of market towns, while artisans resist social exclusion. In this way, a theoretical and practical study is carried out, which includes a field visit, interviews with women artisans from Aratuípe and recording in a field diary/ urban routes. Alongside the theoretical-critical framework used, it is argued that these women, mostly black, form, in the Baixo Sul Territory, a pole of Afrocultural resistance and female protagonism, concerning environmental preservation in the transformation of clay and the development of cities.
