Live music one hundred years later: Unique performances on music rolls

In the last years we have investigated some of the private collections of music Piano Rolls in Spain, and Rafael Otermin Mendoza's collection has been a great discovery. This is probably the best and largest collection in the country (with approximately 6,000 items), distributed among different locations, which makes access and work quite difficult. However, the main bulk of the collection is in the Madrid town of Torrelodones, where we have gone on several occasions to make an inventory of the collection and carry out a pre-cataloguing of all the piano rolls kept there. This initial work has allowed us to get to know an important part of the collection (around 3.000 music rolls) and to rescue some of its most interesting examples. Through this paper we will present some of the copies found in which the names of artists and composers are present due to their direct action in the recording of the music. We will unveil some of the ‘artist’ rolls in this part of the collection.
