This interview with the artist-researcher Luciano Mendes de Jesus outlines his journey from his early work in theater, through his experiences in Europe with the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards, to the transformation of his perspective leading to his current artistic project based on Vissungo chants. The artist highlights the impact of his practice on his afro-descendant identity formation and the continuation of traditions, emphasizing the role of the chants as instruments of resistance and historical memory. He also critically reflects on Grotowski's research and artistic approach towards afro diasporic cultures, advocating for an epistemic shift to address this transcultural work in performing arts, reaffirming the importance of chant as a means of preserving and experiencing the African humanities and cultural experiences from the diaspora.
