The resumption of ethnicity as a fundamental sociological concept

Ethnicity has long been relegated to a marginal status in Sociology. However, since Max Weber, there have been non-dualist assumptions for a theory of ethnicities. These things considered, this essay seeks to demonstrate the contributions of his concept of Ethnische Gemeinschaften in three ways. At the methodological level, the ethnic group underwent internal changes: the first concept (ethnic community), related to the subjective element of belonging, implied ephemerality; the second one (communal relationships) explores the character of stability in the coordination of actions. At the normative level, Weber differentiates the ethnic community from the tribe based on normative interests, since the pragmatic and rationalist character reflects on ethnicity in a secondary way. In the political level, Weber explores how the nation establishes itself as an ethnic community based on the feeling of common descent. This demonstrates that Weber's theory has guidelines for the resumption of ethnicity as a fundamental sociological concept.
