TEACHER-STUDENT INTERACTION:
WHAT DO THE STUDENTS ASK?

The verbalizations by a first-grade teacher and her pupils
were recorded during the development of classroom activities for six
months of the school year, in a total observation time of 9 hours and 45
minutes. The data analysis yielded a system of categories which describes
the nature of pupils' questions, teacher's verbalizations and academic
activities. A great part of the pupils' questions consisted of requests for
permission to participate in academic activity or to go to the toilet, and for
information about academic content. Nearly half of the teacher's verbalizations
were comprised of instructions or commands of disciplinary or academic
nature. Although it was not possible to establish the types of question which would characteristically appear in each activity, some trends were
detected in the distribution of questions in relation to the form of presentation
of the activities. The results are discussed mainly in terms of the restriction
imposed by classroom activities on pupils' curiosity.
