Raúl Zibechi is a Uruguayan intellectual born in 1952 in Montevideo, and a key figure in the debates on grassroots autonomies. Throughout his life, he has closely followed popular movements in Latin America and other regions, such as the Kurdish people in the Middle East. As this interview shows, Zibechi is an enthusiast of the Zapatista revolution in Chiapas, Mexico.
Author of several books on social movements and the construction of autonomies, some of his most notable works include Brasil Potência (Consequência, 2012), Los desbordes desde abajo: 1968 en América Latina (Desdeabajo, 2018), and Territories in Resistance (translated into Portuguese in 2022 by Elefante Publishing).
During his visit to Brazil in March 2025, Zibechi granted us this interview, which took place at Casa Coletivo Comum in São Paulo — a self-managed art space. In it, he shares parts of his political trajectory, develops conceptual and practical reflections on autonomies, and offers strong critiques of the region’s so-called progressive governments. The interview was organized by the Berta Latin Americanist Collective and is part of the Pulso Latino podcast.
