Abstract

Despite the importance of the church as a social factor that operates in the dynamics of Latin American societies, it has been little studied by our historians and social scientists. The purpose of this essay (part of a study of these developments in the 1960s) is to examine the context in which the ideas of the revolutionary priest Camilo Torres Restrepo emerge, to analyze his theory and theology of the revolution to understand its continental consequences, and examine some of the questions posed by this phenomenon to the history and sociology of religion.

Author Biography

Samuel Silva Gotay, Universidade de Porto Rico

sociólogo porto-riquenho, professor na Universidade de Porto Rico (UPR) na Faculdade de Ciências Sociais de Río Piedras. Formado em Psicologia na UPR, mestre em Teologia e Sociologia da Religião na Universidade de Yale e doutor em Estudos Latino-Americanos pela Universidade Autônoma do México. Possui vários trabalhos sobre as relações da igreja com a sociedade latino-americana. Entre eles se conta com o intitulado O Apostolo e a Igreja e a pobreza em Porto Rico: Uma interpretação histórico-social. Conhece, amplamente, a discutida Teologia da Libertação que surge na América Latina, a partir da reunião do Conselho Episcopal Latino-Americano em Medellin, Colômbia. Publica a Bibliografia mínima da Teologia da Libertação
