The most important reference in Central American sociology so far is Edelberto Torres-Rivas. One of the foundational moments of his academic life was spent in Chile, when he participated in a study group, at the Instituto Latinoamericano de Planificación Económica y Social of CEPAL, headed by Fernando Henrique Cardoso and from which the most important book of dependentism emerged: Dependencia y desarrollo en América Latina of Cardoso and Enzo Faletto, published in 1969. As a result of this experience Torres-Rivas published Interpretación del desarrollo social centroamericano, also in 1969. This essay intends to analyze this work by Edelberto Torres-Rivas and put it into dialogue with the work of Cardoso and Falleto, to illuminate the contact points of a true Latin American historical sociology founded in the heat of the fruitful debates in the sixties.
