Abstract

The present research defines the stages and purpose of the genre picture book, based on a corpus formed by 6 Chilean books. This multimodal genre has been considered fundamental for developing effective processes on children literacy, and for promoting implicit or explicit ideology, because the messages it transmits show the world and the dominant social values. From this perspective, it is important to incorporate the study of stories at a micro territorial level, in order to establish links between the study of the world in the social practices and in their specific representations. A multimodal configuration is observed in relation to the modes present in the corpus, but not in the specific systems. In addition, variable mode is important because it makes possible the realisation of couplings. Finally, verbal content is mitigated by visual meanings that separate texts from realism.
