Abstract

This research paper aims to convey the influence of daylight on the environmental performance of airport buildings. Currently, new activities are being combined with these buildings giving them a highly complex configuration. Thus, the use of daylight has been proved to be necessary for any kind of building due to its importance to human comfort, visual tasks, human health and energy savings. In order to corroborate the significance of using natural lighting in buildings, the Zambrano's Relationship Matrix has been used as an evaluation tool for the environmental impact of buildings. This tool uses an Environmental Performance Evaluation method to weight the influence of natural lighting when crossed with environmental performance indicators and architectonic components. The results show the most accessed Environmental Performance Indicators that should be monitored during the architectonic project phases and post-occupancy monitoring. In summary, these indicators are: air quality, ventilation and relative humidity; natural and artificial lighting and visual acuity; temperature and humidity; annual net consumption of electricity by the building facilities; renewable energy consumption; visual comfort. Moreover, these indicators are closely related to the benefits regarding human health, human comfort and energy consumption, all of them fostering the relevance of the use of natural lighting in large buildings, such as airports.
