The Province of Bahia and the construction of the national State:
the work of Francisco Vicente Viana (1824-1825)

The Independence of Brazil marked the political history of the future country, but was not able to profoundly change the lives of the majority of the population. The disturbance of public order and the compromising of the unity of the territory, caused by various demonstrations in the provinces, required the political elites to make agreements and decisions capable of dealing with the constant threats. It is therefore important to look at the role of the provinces in the political game immediately after September 7, 1822, and their relations with the center of power in Rio de Janeiro. In this article, we set out to analyze the political role of the province of Bahia in the construction of Brazil's territorial and political unity in the years immediately following the declaration of Independence. To this end, we have chosen the government of President Francisco Viana (1824-1825), as we believe that the creation of the post of provincial president and the actions of this authority contributed to guaranteeing territorial unity and the construction of the imperial state in Brazil. Along the way, we will learn about Francisco Viana's political career, the measures adopted to curb manifestations of discontent and threats to the unity of the territory and the attitudes to affirm the authority of the provincial president in the face of the proposed organization of the state in Brazil.
