The book 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami addresses recurring themes in his work, particularly the relationship that language has with fiction and reality. One of the protagonists of the novel, Tengo, is a writer who realizes he has been cast into a parallel world, a world that bears striking similarities to the fictional story he wrote. Thus, the discussion moves beyond the diegetic aspect and becomes non-diegetic, metalinguistic, when we realize that Murakami is discussing the influence of fiction in the reality in which the 1Q84 novel exists, i.e., our own. I intend to demonstrate how this discussion is possible based on semiotic notions of Charles S. Peirce, the father of pragmatism and semiotics, and other pragmatic philosophers such as Richard Rorty, C. G. Prado, and Susan Haack, who discussed the importance of the relationship between language, fiction, and reality.
