Abstract

This text presents two moments in Luce Irigaray's philosophy: the critique of the ontology of matricide and the proposal of an ontology attentive to the placentation process. To this end, two texts are evoked: Le Corps à Corps avec la mère and À propos de l’ordre maternel. The text follows the reflections proposed by the belgian author, pointing out that an attention to the material process of placentation can give rise to a relational ontology that serves as a counterpoint to a metaphysical individualism. To present the terms of this opposition, the text reflects on the panoptic of the uterus exemplified by Lennart Nilsson's image Spaceman: by portraying the fetus as an astronaut, Nilsson produces the erasure of the pregnant person. The figure is invested in  the process of humanization of the fetus, and in carrying out the matricide as erasure. Attention to the placentation process, on the other hand, allows us to understand the collective process of becoming. In the (political) tension between the two ontologies, individualism and relationality are at stake and, therefore, different ways of inhabiting the world are also in dispute.
