This work investigates the ways in which gender, sexuality and masculinity are (re)interpreted in Akwaeke Emezi’s The Death of Vivek Oji. Snorton’s (2017) discussion on “still life” is the departure point to question how Vivek/Nnemdi and Osita, the protagonist and their cousin, illustrate strategies of deconstruction of masculinities. Relying on theoretical contributions by Segato (2021), Oyewumi (2021) and Connell (2016), it is concluded that the novel reveals the political power of a “queer being” which destabilises essentialist and binary narratives.
