George Moore (1852—1933) nasceu no Condado de Mayo, Irlanda, e escreveu prosa, poesia, teatro, com temáticas que versavam sobre a sociedade irlandesa e inglesa da virada do século (Jeffares, 1965). Ele conviveu com as sequelas do período conhecido como a Grande Fome, quando as plantações da Irlanda sofriam com pragas e não eram suficientes para alimentar sua população, e se envolveu com o Renascimento Cultural Irlandês, um movimento que pretendia alçar a Irlanda como centro cultural e artístico, tudo isso dentro de um contexto de convivência conturbada com a Inglaterra colonizadora. Seus textos exploram muitos dos questionamentos e problemas sociais do seu contexto histórico e pessoal na Irlanda, França e Inglaterra, onde viveu, além de suscitar várias reflexões íntimas sobre o eu, o papel social do eu e, também, sobre o eu artista (Pierse, 2006). Um deles foi “Homesickness” (1903), o conto aqui apresentado. Nele, o autor aborda as questões da Grande Fome e da imigração de irlandeses partindo do ponto de vista de James Bryden, um irlandês do vilarejo de Duncannon, que migrou aos Estados Unidos ainda jovem, mas que precisa voltar à Irlanda para convalescer. O conto faz parte de uma série de textos ambientados na Irlanda rural — tal qual o Condado de Mayo —, publicados inicialmente na coleção The Untilled Field (1903), no período em que seu autor participou do Renascimento Literário Irlandês, o Irish Revival.
