Open Access Citizen Science Projects: a (non) reality in Portugal

Abstract

Citizen Science, as a principle underlying Open Science, presupposes the involvement of citizens and society in the use, scrutiny and production of science, and is characterized by the participation of amateurs or non-scientists in the construction of scientific knowledge, enhanced by the growing use of information and communication technologies and social networks. The data collected and the metadata resulting from these projects are naturally made publicly available and published in open access. From the information collected on different Internet platforms, projects were identified in Portugal, in the areas of Social Sciences and Humanities and Natural Sciences, which are developed according to the collaborative spirit and involvement of local communities and citizens in general. The aim, in addition to identifying these projects, is to analyse, from a quantitative point of view, Open Access practices, namely, the provision and publication of open access content, open research data (access and reuse), the existence of digital repositories, data management and participation in international projects. It is concluded that there are few truly Citizen Science projects, although the collaboration of communities and citizens in the collaborative construction of knowledge is growing, and even rarer are those that make data available in open access, for subsequent reuse.

Doutora em Ciências da Informação e Documentação pela Universidade de Évora (2016) com a investigação intitulada A Missão Social da Biblioteca Pública: uma visão das bibliotecas públicas portuguesas a partir do Facebook. Mestre em Ciência da Informação (2011). Pós-graduada em Ciências Documentais (1992). Licenciada em Filosofia (1985). Investigadora do CIDEHUS - Centro Interdisciplinar de História, Culturas e Sociedades da Universidade de Évora.

Ana Margarida Dias da Silva, Universidade de Coimbra, Faculdade de Letras, Coimbra, Portugal

Ana Margarida Dias da Silva, arquivista desde 2004, tem trabalhado em arquivos públicos e privados. É técnica superior no Arquivo do Departamento das Ciências da Vida da Universidade de Coimbra. Aluna do doutoramento em Ciência da Informação da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra, mestre em Ciência da Informação e Documentação pela Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (2013) e mestre em História Contemporânea pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra (2014). A sua dissertação de mestrado O uso da Internet e da Web 2.0 na difusão e acesso à informação arquivística: o caso dos arquivos municipais portugueses venceu o 1º Prémio Olga Gallego de Investigación en Archivos (2015).

Principais áreas de interesse e investigação: Ciência da Informação; Arquivística; Organização e Representação da Informação; Comunicação da Informação; Instituições de Memória; Crowdsourcing; Ciência Cidadã; Arquivos pessoais e familiares; História Social; História religiosa.
