Abstract

This article reflects on W.E.B. Du Bois 's empirical research program and his sociological writings about inequalities. The analysis focuses mainly on the contents of the volumes published when Du Bois held strictly academic positions at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Atlanta, from where he published works such as The Philadelphia Negro (1899), the reports of the Atlanta Conferences. ( 1897 – 1913) and Black Reconstruction in America (1935). It is argued that Du Bois' research projects, initially focused on the "Negro Problem" in the United States, brought pioneering contributions to the main sociological discussions about social inequalities, through the author's original conceptualizations about terms such as "class", " race” and “caste”.
