Abstract

This study recontextualizes the photomontages produced by Grete Stern, which circulated in the conservative feminine magazine Idilio between 1948 and 1951, aiming at tracing approximations between this iconic and mediatic production and feminist critical utopianism, by pointing out alignments between the images constructed by Stern and certain metaphors concerning gendered violence, which reccur in literary dystopias written by women. Thematic and formal issues are considered in relation to gender representation, as well as the implications of reading the photographer´s production by resorting to lenses of the 21st century. The utopian potential presented in Stern´s dystopianism is also highlighted.
