Abstract

At the beginning of 19th century, Novalis urged his contemporaries to build a utopian Europe ”“ politically harmonious, spiritually renewed and artistically creative ”“ by means of a return to the Middle Ages. This medievalizing utopianism assumed, at the end of the 19th century, a socialist and a proto-environmentalist character in the writings of William Morris, which, in turn, would decisively influence British fantasy literature in the first half of the 20th century. Within this literature the medieval utopia took a refuge. In all these cases, the visual arts where mobilized to give tangibility to the proposed utopias, whose relations with medieval art will be discussed here.
