Abstract

Psychology is holding a deep identity crisis. This situation seems to be more serious in Brazil, since graduate
courses tend to overestimate practical aspects and neglect the basic foundations of psychology. Thus, it is created a long
distance as well as a tension between science and profession which is pernicious to psychologist's professional formation. The
main purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of Popper's thought on Brazilian psychology by analysing papers
published between 1986 and 1995 in Arquivos Brasileiros de Psicologia and Psicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa. The main results
were: A very small number of papers with bibliographical references to Popper, a superficial citation of his work and an
absence of discussions on the implications of his philosophy of science for psychology. These findings seem to corroborate the
hypothesis that there is a lack of metascientific discussions in Brazilian psychology.
