Abstract

The purpose of this paper was to review literature referring
to caretaking behavior among children, in order to evaluate the available
data, and to suggest productive directions for future research on this theme.
The review looked for evidences on the occurrence of caretaking behavior
among children, its relations with age and sex of the subjects, variations
in cultural contexts, bblogical bases and effects on development.
The discussion focuses on the question of categorization, which is
brought out by the diversity of categories found in the literature. It is
concluded that the study of caretaking behaviour lacks a descriptive approach,
from which an adequate system of categories could be derived.
