Abstract

This essay has two main purposes. Firstly, we discuss the
evolution of the debate on the role assigned to language within
cognitive development in western literature. We present the opposing
views of Chomsky and Piaget and the recent attempt, on the part of
other researchers, to reach a consensus based on less radical versions of
these two viewpoints. Secondly, we try to recover and emphasize the
contribution of Vygotsky and his followers, due to our belief that their
theoretical propositions may re-direct our conceptions about the
relation of linguistics with other cognitive processes in both child and
adult.
