Abstract

Homeostatic, equilibration models have had an enormous influence on research and thinking about motivation. It is argued that such models do not offer a sufficient basis for a general theory in the field, and that new frameworks, in which the adaptation of motivational processes to environmental conditions are explicitly taken into account, should be explored. The study of the role of past experience and of ontogeny; of incentive and cost variables; and of ecologically relevant performance in different species are some of the ways through which our view of motivational processes can be enriched.
