Abstract

Some basic relations in acoustical psychophysics were
reviewed in this article, calling attention to a possible specialization of
the human auditory system for language processing. Some research
data were reviewed in support to the following statements: a) speaking
depends on hearing; b) responding to speech in a meaningfull way
depends on hearing; c) impairment of hearing hampers the use of
speech as a form of communication. Finally, some issues were raised on
the research and technology for the management of hearing impairment
and communication by, and with, the hearing impaired.
