Hunger and Food Insecurity among indigenous peoples from the perspective of health professionals at a base center in the Special Indigenous Health District of Bahia

This study aims to analyze the understandings of hunger and food insecurity among indigenous peoples from health professionals at a Base Center of the Special Indigenous Health District of Bahia (DSEI - Bahia). Considering that Bahia is the state in the Northeast with the largest number of indigenous people, a qualitative study was carried out in the region of Paulo Afonso, Bahia. In the production of empirical data, narrative interviews were conducted between September 2021 and August 2022 with health professionals working at DSEI-Ba. The results consider how the issues that affect the territory in interaction with globalizing processes and colonial-modernity affect the production of hunger and dietary changes in daily life, and how they are produced by social, historical, political and economic contexts, on different scales. Thus, it is considered that hunger and food insecurity in indigenous communities require in-depth analysis of the demographic and social conditions faced by this population, from the perspective of the relationships built from and essentially from the territory. By analyzing the worsening of inequalities related to indigenous peoples, it is hoped that this study can contribute to the development of effective strategies and actions to mitigate inequalities, taking into account the specificities of different ethnic communities.
