INDEPENDENT CANDIDATES IN A COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE

This paper aims to examine the independent candidates in a comparative perspective, highlighting some aspects of previous international experiences, including Germany, France, United Kingdom, United States and Chile. Finally, this paper reaches the conclusion that, although there are surveys indicating that Brazilians disbelieve elected representatives, established governments and national political parties at large, the international experiences analyzed point out that independent candidates do not have great repercussions on the national political scenario, precisely because the Brazilian electoral system is essentially based on political parties. Therefore, even if the change in the electoral scenario may be seen as valid and positive, it is not expected to be immediately feasible or to significantly affect the current electoral scenario in Brazil.
