Abstract

The traditional knowledge is directly related to the maintenance of biodiversity. Ethnozoology, the scientific study of the interactions between humans and animals, is helpful for research pertaining to the management of natural resources. Among these interactions, zootherapy stands out, in other words, the use of animals, their parts and products for medicinal purposes. The aim of this study is to characterize and analyse the medical uses of wildlife in a community in the Caatinga. The results from our research indicate 17 separate species of local wildlife which are used for medical purposes including seven mammals, five reptiles, three birds and two insects. The highest use values found were the teju lizard and the water turtle. The factor of participant consensus was greater in those relating to the respiratory system. Knowledge regarding zootherapeutic products is an important cultural asset and the community studied here demonstrated a commitment to preserving this knowledge.
