Abstract

The aim of this study is register the collection, primary processing and use procedures of the pracaxi (Pentaclethra macroloba (Wild.) O. Kuntze) by the residents of the Cotijuba Island, belonging to the municipality of Belém, state of Pará (Brazil). The seed collection has been intensified after the signing of a multinational company contract that partially uses this plant, originally recognized by its medical and logging resources to the local residents. The cut for the last purpose clashes with the medical and cosmetic interests by not having technically organized plantations or the systematic replanting that allows its recovery. The vegetal oil found in this plant, by its elevated nutritional and energy value and by its multi-area-purpose in the industry, constitute of resources whose potential offers great exploration possibilities. The island residents recognize such activity as an alternative of income resource and have accepted the partnership with the company interested in the product whose form of exploration is considered inducting of sustainability.
