Bioactivity of essential oils of eucalyptus species for control of Spodoptera frugiperda (JE Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Abstract

This research aimed to evaluate the toxicity and feeding deterrent of  Corymbia citriodora, Eucalyptusurophylla and E. urograndis essential oils to control Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith, 1797)(Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on corn in laboratory assays and semi-field. After collection, the fresh plant material was processed by turbolisis in the proportion of 200g of fresh weight to 1 L of water and then subjected to extraction of essential oil extractor Clevenger for 3 h. The essential oils obtained were evaluated concerning the plague about its topical action, antifeeding test without double-choice, antifeeding test with double-choice, and sprayed on corn plant. It was found that the essential oils tested showed toxicity topical, and the C. citriodora was more efficient by causing higher mortality rate. It was found that three essential oils showed antifeedant activity compared to control. The application of essential oils of C. citriodora and E. urograndis spraying were promising to protect the crop.
