Resumo

A análise do discurso multimodal (ADM) é um paradigma emergente nos estudos do discurso que amplia o estudo da linguagem per se para o estudo da linguagem em combinação com outros recursos. Neste trabalho, discutem-se as principais preocupações da ADM, as razões para o surgimento deste campo na lingüística, assim como a multiplicidade de enfoques das análisis de discursos multimodais desenvolvidos e, a seguir, são analizados em detalhe conceptos específicos da ADM. A partir daí, um exemplo de análise multimodal é apresentado: um segmento de um debate político transmitido pela televisão. O principal desafio da ADM é de lidar com os detalhes e a complexidade inerentes à anotação, análise, investigação e recuperação dos padrões semânticos presentes em fenômenos multimodais complexos. Por isso, um dos possíveis métodos de abordar essa complexidade se dá pelo desenvolvimento de plataformas mediáticas digitais interativas desenhadas especificamente para a ADM. De qualquer maneira, o caminho adiante requer necessariamente a colaboração interdisciplinar para atingir os objetivos mais amplos de compreensão dos padrões e tendências em tecnologias, texto, contexto e cultura.
