Abstract

This paper deals with speech competence, which is a well known concept in linguistic Sciences. At the beginning, researchers talked
about “linguistic competence”. Later, of communicative competence in the field oflanguage teaching and, simultaneously, of ethnography of communication developed in the United States, but never about the relationship between the two. What we want to show here, after reviewing different definitions of the concept, is the need to differentiate several leveis of competence in order to see how they articulate. Finally, several issues that circulate in the fields of discourse analysis and language teaching are discussed in order to clear them out in light of the model proposed.
