Abstract

This paper examines the interactions between science, spaces and commercial agents, focusing on the circulation and study of certain marine animals that for centuries were objects of commercial exploitation, exhibitions and scientific debates due to their classification. The analysis of the practices of naturalists, sailors and organizers of shows between the eighteenth and nineteenth century aims to collaborate with this history and to discuss how the representations about the creatures that inhabited the marine space were modeled.
