The aim of this paper is to discuss the role of the diary as an instrument of data collection in qualitative research. The daily writing of notes and comments allows the researcher to recover with precision past events in the discursive process which would otherwise go unnoticed. In addition, the diary shows new aspects to be observed leading to reflexivity and to a redefinition of the focus of qualitative analyses. We propose to examine the diary as a specific genre.
