This paper presents some of the results of a study on the discursive strategies of the Afro-Uruguayan community in media. I seek to address aspects related to identity and the strategies used by this community to position themselves publicly. This work focuses on the first public texts written by Afro-Uruguayans, including the first two publications of the "societies of color" in Montevideo. From the theoretical and methodological perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis and with tools from Systemic Functional Linguistics, I analyze the texts as a discursive practice to identify the strategies used to reclaim the place of Afro-descendants in the new nation that is consolidating itself. I present examples to show how the argument is constructed in relation to the lexical-grammatical and discursive resources of the text, based on the appraisal analysis (Martin & White, 2005).
